Welcome!
Wing Chun, (also known as Ving
Tsun or Wing Tsun)
kung fu is a traditional style of southern Chinese martial art. It
is widely known as the style Bruce Lee studied before shooting to Hollywood fame.
The Wing Chun Federation maintains a
non-political standpoint. We are a collective of like minded groups
and teachers primarily concerned with the teaching of quality Wing
Chun kung fu. We believe that political infighting only serves to
divide, and will not enhance our martial arts in any way.
Wing Chun is a subtle and complete system of Chinese
Kung Fu, developed over hundreds of years to serve as a natural
protection for the body, and as an effective fighting method.
According to legend Wing Chun was initially devised by Ng Moi, a Buddhist nun. The style was then
taught to a young girl called Yim
Wing Chun, who successfully used her newly learned skills to
defend herself against a local bully who attempted to rape her.
"Improve self
confidence, assertiveness and self esteem"
When the legendary Grandmaster Yip
Man arrived in Hong Kong, the
style was taught to Wong Shun Leung, who in turn developed
his own interpretation of the style based around his experience of Beimo or challenge fighting. Wong was a
peerless and intelligent fighter. Throughout his many Hong Kong challenge fights, in which he
fought experts and champions from many different martial arts
styles, he remained undefeated. Wong named his style of Wing Chun, 'Ving Tsun'.
It was forged in the fire of battle to be simple direct and
efficient. He was also known as Bruce Lee's mentor and coach
and continued to exchange ideas with him up until Bruce's death.
"Suitable for any age
and fitness level"
Wing Chun does not pit strength
against strength but rather employs its unique understanding of
angles and sensitivity to force in order to over come aggression. A
small or physically weaker victim who is
skilled in Ving Tsun,
can overcome an attack from a much bigger and stronger assailant.
This makes Wing Chun also ideal for Women's Self Defence. It
is also suitable for any age, and fitness level. The training focus
is on the reality of fighting, as opposed to competition or sport.
"Exercises are
scientific in approach."
Wing Chun exercises are systematic
and logical, training is carried out in a
atmosphere of friendly co-operation as opposed to one of
aggressive competition, allowing students to develop freely and
at their own pace. It is possible for a complete novice to become
competent within one year, although practical ability is only the
beginning; there is always room for deeper exploration and personal
interpretation.
"Maintains a healthy
body and mind"
Aside from the obvious fighting
applications, Wing Chun also helps to maintain a healthy body
and mind. Regular practice will help loosen the joints, tone
the musculature and improve posture. By the very nature of the
practice a relaxed and focused mind is also achieved. This
combination reduces stress and allows the body's natural protection
mechanisms to strengthen.
"Teaching is endorsed to
the highest levels."
The effectiveness of Alan
Gibson's teaching is endorsed to the highest levels, both in
Hong Kong and the UK.
Alan has been teaching Kung Fu and Women's Self Defence for many
years he has had three books (Why Wing Chun Works, Simple
Thinking: Intelligent Fighters and The Wing Chun Forms: Combat
Textbooks) as well as several DVDs on Wing Chun published.
