Alan
Gibson
Alan Gibson has taught martial arts for twenty years
and takes seminars on Wing Chun all over the country. He has a
degree in sports studies which has furthered his understanding of
the bio-mechanical, sociological and psychological aspects of the
art. Alan is the author of the popular books Why Wing Chun Works, Simple
Thinking: Intelligent Fighters and The Wing Chun Forms: Combat
Textbooks, available from all good book stores internationally.
He is currently producing a benchmark series of instructional DVDs
which are now available from all normal outlets.
Alan has taught seminars and courses for Southampton
Dept. of Adult Education, City Training, Southampton Working
Women's Unit, the Probation Service, and many different youth groups.
He is registered with Southampton Sports Development Unit. He has
also lectured on coaching philosophy for Southampton University
sports studies department.
The Wing Chun Federation - formed by Alan
in 1990 - maintains a non-political standpoint and is primarily
concerned with the teaching of quality Kung Fu. Its objective is to
teach Wing Chun in a relaxed and accessible manner, where emphasis
is placed on good technique and personal development rather than
violence and aggression. Wing Chun can be simply learnt by
commitment and patience - age, sex or physical size is of no
consequence, and a high level of proficiency can be obtained
quickly and with ease.
The Wing Chun Federation also runs regular
self-defence for women courses where the student learns the
essentials of defending themselves against would be attackers, as
well as how to avoid dangerous or uncomfortable confrontations
where possible. These self-defence seminars combine the
fundamentals of Wing Chun with methods of incapacitating an attacker,
allowing the student to make her escape. These courses stand alone
as effective self-defence, and are also an ideal introduction to
learn the subtleties of Wing Chun.
As an independent and non-political
organisation, The Wing Chun Federation often organises seminars by
guest teachers. These are normally held at the WCF HQ in Southampton. Previous visiting Masters have
included, David Peterson (Wong Shun Leung), Wan Kam Leung (Wong
Shun Leung) and Ip Chun.
During the many years he has studied
martial arts, Alan has travelled to Hong Kong
to train with other Wing Chun masters and experts. The Wing Chun
Federation and its teachers are registered with the Ip Man Martial
Arts Association and the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in Hong Kong.
