The Wing Chun Federation
Alan Gibson formed the Wing Chun
Federation in 1990. The federation's objective is to teach Wing
Chun Kung Fu in a relaxed and accessible manner, where emphasis is
placed on good technique and personal development rather than
violence and aggression.
Wing Chun can be simply learnt by
commitment and patience. Age, sex or physical size is of no
consequence, and a high level of proficiency can be obtained
quickly and with ease.
The Wing Chun Federation also runs regular
'self defence for women courses' where the student will learn the
essentials of defending themselves against would be attackers, as
well as how to avoid dangerous or uncomfortable confrontations
where possible. These self-defence courses combine the fundamentals
of Wing Chun with methods of incapacitating an attacker in order
for the student to make her escape. These courses stand alone as
effective self-defence and are also an ideal introduction to learn
the subtleties of Wing Chun.
Alan has studied martial arts for 16 years
attaining a Black Sash in Wing Chun in 1986. Since then he has been
teaching Kung Fu and has also taught Women's self defence for
Southampton Department of Adult Education, Southampton City
Training, Southampton
University
and the Probation Service. During this time he has frequently
travelled to Hong Kong to train
with Wing Chun masters including Ip Chun, whose late father Ip Man,
taught Bruce Lee.
The Wing Chun Federation and its teachers
are registered with the Ip Man Martial Arts Association in Hong Kong. Alan has a degree in sports
science which has furthered his understanding of the bio-mechanical
and psychological aspects of the art.
As an independent organisation, The Wing
Chun Federation often organises seminars by guest teachers. These
are normally held at The Wing Chun Federations H.Q. in Southampton. Previous visiting Masters have
included, Ip Chun, David Peterson (Wong Shun Leung), Paul O'Neil
(Ip Ching), and Wan Kam Leung (Wong Shun Leung). We also arrange
trips abroad and other projects when we can. If you are interested
in attending future seminars or trips, please contact Alan Gibson
(see contact page for further details).
