About Alan Gibson

lan Gibson, has been training in the martial arts since 1980. He became a student of Wing Chun in 1984. He is a graduate of the Winchester University where he majored in Sports and Business. Alan learned his Wing Chun initially in his home town of Southampton before travelling to Hong Kong to further his studies with Ip Chun (Ip Man’s son).

In 1990 Alan founded The Wing Chun Federation with the express purpose of concerning himself with the development of his Wing Chun. As an independent organisation, The Wing Chun Federation arranges seminars and workshops by guest teachers, including our friend and guide Hong Kong Sifu, Cliff Au-Yeung. The Wing Chun Federation coaches maintain strong bonds with the birthplace of Wing Chun and its best known principles.

Alan is best known as the author of his popular, Wing Chun books. Alan’s books are available internationally, and have been translated into German, Italian and Russian. Alan is also a freelance writer, whose articles have appeared in journals, including Wing Chun Illustrated, Combat, and Martial Arts Illustrated. Alan is currently working on the production of a new series of online instructional films and linked articles.

Alan is well known for his workshops and is always happy to express his ideas and training methods to other groups. He demonstrated at the First World Wing Chun Conference in Hong Kong in 1999 and continues to forge links with like minded martial artists both in the UK and throughout the world.

Alan Gibson’s Southampton Wing Chun classes have been running since 1995. Alan’s latest book Wing Chun Wisdom: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants was published in January 2021. Alan also teaches Qigong for health and wellbeing in Southampton
